Many opportunities to talk with your children can
be found throughout the day. Listen carefully to what
your children say. Find opportunities to talk with them
instead of at them. Dinnertime is a good time for families
to share information. Bedtime allows a chance for some
private time when parents and children can discuss what's
going on in the child's life.
How you talk to your children is important too. Get
at eye level and eliminate distractions. Ask questions,
but don't interrogate. Keep it brief and don't lecture.
Help your children feel comfortable when they tell you
things. If they fear your reaction, they won't volunteer
much information.
If children tell you about a problem, remain calm and
hear them out. By listening calmly, asking brief clarifying
questions, and saying understanding words, you will
help your children open up. Once you have heard the
whole story, you'll be better able to discuss the situation
and come up with solutions.
Always remember to praise your children when they try
to share their problems, thoughts and opinions with
you.
