Vestibular Tests: Right Side Lying

  • One maneuver we can use to diagnose right posterior canal BPPV is a modification of the Dix-Hallpike called the side lying maneuver.  To do this, the patient will sit on the side of the table and turn their head over the left shoulder.  Then you’ll support them as they lay back and they can cross their arms over their chest.  Here you’re looking at the eyes for any nystagmus and you would stay here for 30 seconds until or until you see nystagmus and you would wait until that nystagmus fatigues.  Then you’ll support them to sit back up and view their eyes for any nystagmus.
