Candidacy
Cochlear implant candidacy is based on the individual’s hearing ability and projected outcomes with a cochlear implant. Therefore, a comprehensive assessment is necessary. Boys Town Hospital audiologists have extensive experience and knowledge in evaluating children and adults for a cochlear implant.
The candidacy evaluation may consist of some or all of the following appointments:
- Audiological and hearing aid assessment
- Speech, language, auditory skills, and/or general communication assessment
- Medical/surgical evaluation
- Computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Balance assessment
- Device orientation
- Counseling and expectations visit

Cochlear Implant Candidacy for Children
- Approximately age 12 months or older
- Bilateral severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss
- Limited benefit with appropriately fit hearing aids
- Lack of progress in auditory skill development despite appropriate intervention
- No physical contraindications for placement of the implant (i.e., MRI or CT results)
- Medically cleared to
undergo surgery
- Realistic expectations and commitment to follow-up appointments

Cochlear Implant Candidacy for Adults
- Moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss for at least a portion of the frequency range in one or both ears
- Limited benefit with appropriately fit hearing aids
- No physical contraindications for placement of the implant (e.g., MRI or CT results)
- Medically cleared to
undergo surgery
- Realistic expectations and commitment to follow-up appointments
