Aural Habilitation/Rehabilitation
Aural (re)habilitation focuses on learning to listen with the cochlear implant. The speech–language pathologists, audiologists, and deaf educators at Boys Town National Research Hospital work with patients and their families to develop a comprehensive assessment and aural (re)habilitation program. Our clinicians support a variety of communication preferences including, but not limited to, spoken language communication, Signing Exact English (SEE) and American Sign Language (ASL).
Pediatric (Re)Habilitation
Pediatric aural (re)habilitation services are designed to support both the child and the family to maximize auditory, speech, and language development. Services may include:
- Speech-language evaluations
- Regular speech-language-listening therapy
- Distance speech-language-listening therapy (via secure online connections)
- Counseling
- Educational guidance
Adult Rehabilitation
Most adults who receive a cochlear implant notice some improvement in their detection of soft sounds. Speech understanding takes more time and practice. Our adult rehabilitation and therapy program is customized to support each patient’s communication and hearing goals. Services may include:
- Aural rehabilitation (therapy services to improve speech understanding with the cochlear implant)
- Distance aural rehabilitation (via secure online connections)
- Education for recipients and their families about communication strategies to enhance their interactions
